Justice & Organizing

Inspired by the prophets and Jesus, who taught us to love God with everything we have, and to love our neighbor as ourselves, we live our faith out loud as we work for justice. At Black Lives Matter protests, LGBQTIA+ rallies, the Women’s March, Climate Change events, and activism around gun violence, prison reform, the rights of immigrants, and a living wage, we are there. We affirm the transformative power of moral imagination to create a more just society.

Justice work is at the very heart of Middle Church—it’s not just what we do; it’s who we are. Our faith compels us to take bold, loving action to create a world where everyone can thrive. Rooted in the belief that love is justice in action, we challenge systems of oppression, fight for equity, and build bridges across divides. From racial and economic justice to gender and ecological liberation, every act of advocacy and solidarity is an expression of our identity as a fiercely loving and inclusive community. At Middle, justice is more than a mission—it’s our way of being in the world.

Reproductive Rights

Abortion is healthcare and a basic right. We affirm the freedom to make decisions about one’s body as relates to justice, liberation, and religious liberty.

At Middle Church, we affirm that reproductive justice is a moral imperative. We advocate for equitable access to abortion, contraception, and maternal healthcare as essential rights. Recognizing the intersection of race, class, and gender, we fight for policies that protect bodily autonomy and center the voices of those most impacted by restrictive legislation. Together, we work to ensure everyone can make decisions about their own bodies, free from fear or coercion.

  • How We Act:
    • Partnerships with organizations like Planned Parenthood and the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.
    • Vigils, protests, and community education on reproductive healthcare.

Racial/Ethnic Justice

White supremacy must be dismantled. We confront racial injustice as essential to liberation, acting on faith to build a just, equitable world for all.

Dismantling racism and white supremacy is central to our faith. Middle Church is committed to addressing systemic inequities that disproportionately affect Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities. From standing in solidarity with the Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) community to advocating for reparations and racial equity, we believe faith calls us to act boldly for justice.

  • How We Act:
    • Hosting workshops on anti-racism and solidarity.
    • Supporting movements like Black Lives Matter and Stop AAPI Hate.
    • Organizing events to amplify the voices of marginalized communities.

Gender/Sexuality Justice

Every person is made in God’s image. We celebrate love in all its forms, creating spaces for LGBTQ+ joy, liberation, and belonging year-round.

Middle Church celebrates the full spectrum of gender identities and sexual orientations, affirming that all are made in the image of God. We advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights, gender equity, and the liberation of all people from systems of oppression. Our work includes creating inclusive spaces, fighting discriminatory legislation, and amplifying queer and trans voices.

  • How We Act:
    • Hosting groups for queer connection and support, including queer Black men’s groups.
    • Advocating for transgender rights and gender-affirming care.
    • Partnering with organizations like the National LGBTQ Task Force and Transgender Law Center.

Economic Justice

Economic and racial justice are intertwined. Faith calls us to address systemic poverty, offering aid and advocating for equity and liberation.

Middle Church believes that economic systems must serve people, not the other way around. We advocate for living wages, affordable housing, and fair labor practices. Economic justice is intertwined with racial, gender, and environmental equity, and we work to address systemic poverty through direct support and advocacy for policy change.

  • How We Act:
    • Partnering with organizations like the Poor People’s Campaign and local food pantries.
    • Advocacy for workers’ rights, including fair wages and safe working conditions.
    • Supporting mutual aid networks and community-driven economic solutions.

Immigration Justice

Borders violate God’s love, and no human is illegal. Faith compels us to abolish ICE, confront injustice, and welcome every stranger with love.

Middle Church stands in solidarity with immigrants and refugees, affirming the dignity of all people, regardless of their nationality or status. We advocate for humane immigration policies, fight against detention and deportation, and provide direct support to immigrant families navigating complex systems.

  • How We Act:
    • Offering resources for legal aid and Know Your Rights workshops.
    • Partnering with organizations like Make the Road NY and the New Sanctuary Coalition.
    • Advocating for pathways to citizenship and the abolition of inhumane detention practices.

Ecological Justice

We are called to love all creation. Faith demands climate justice that rejects racism, capitalism, and harm to our interconnected world.

We believe in the power of Love. Period.

Through Love, we are each created in God’s image and filled with the Divine Spark. No matter whom we love, no matter how we look, no matter where we are on our journey, God’s imprint is in every person of every race/ethnicity, every gender, and every sexual orientation. We believe God speaks many languages and is calling us on many paths to peace—Shalom. We believe that Love put on flesh—brown, poor, Jewish baby flesh—and came to live among us. We believe God lives among us still; we are the living body of Christ. We are the hands, feet, and heartbeat of God. We believe the Spirit of God calls us to freedom, and we are not free until all of us are free.
