How We Talk About God
Middle's God-Talk is informed and re-formed by both our historic roots and our creative, emerging theology. Middle has one foot anchored in the Reformed tradition, which believes that God is still speaking, and is speaking to all people; and one foot dangling over the edge, forging new traditions and creating new languages and worship forms in which to hear what God is saying to and through God's people. We believe that God keeps on showing us both who God is and what it means for us to be the people of God. We experience that in ancient texts and in spoken word; in classical music and in gospel music; in the preached word and in dance and puppet theater. We experience the Holy in the sanctuary and in Tompkins Square Park. In other words, we worship a Living God who surprises us with Grace and Kindness, whose Love is the reason we are in community, whose Faithfulness is the reason we seek to be faithful. Our faith is one of seeking social justice for all peoples everywhere. It is a joining of spirituality and ritual, a celebration of the preciousness of life, informed by the recognition that God is ever-loving us, always pulling us closer and inviting us, in our freedom, to love one another as we are loved. At Middle Church, our life of faith is joyous, vibrant, vital, and fun!
